Fentanyl: The Dangers of Synthetic Opioids

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 20 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Even a small amount can cause an accidental overdose and death.

Fentanyl is used for pain relief after surgery. Activities such as sale, possession and production are illegal, unless authorized for medical use.

Illegal Fentanyl is produced in laboratories and mixed with heroin, cocaine, meth or MDNA in a powder or pill form. It is associated with accidental overdoses and death because this mixing increases its potency.

The Public Health Agency Of Canada reported an estimated 22,828 Canadians died from an opioid overdose between January 2016 and March 2021.

87% of opioid overdoses involve Fentanyl.
