Prescription Pills: A Commonly Abused Substance

Prescription pills are often taken to treat chronic and acute pain or mental illness. When taken appropriately, it can be beneficial to their treatment. However, the misuse of prescription pills can lead to addiction, overdose, or death.

  • 60% of those who use illegal drugs are 15 to 24 years old.
  • A 2019 Ontario study says that 1 in 10 high school students in grades 7 to 12 reported using a prescription pain reliever. That’s 95,000 students.

In Canada as a whole, it’s estimated that 310,000 Canadian students have taken prescription drugs not prescribed to them.
